Course Review: Slammer & Squire (Winter)

Course Review: Slammer & Squire (Winter)

Beautiful Course, But Pricey in the Off-Season

The 1803 team recently took on the challenge of the Slammer & Squire course at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida. While the course itself impressed us, the value proposition in the winter months left us with mixed feelings.

Course Overview:

Location: 2 World Golf Pl, St. Augustine, FL 32092

Designed by legends Bobby Weed, Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead, Slammer & Squire boasts a scenic layout featuring rolling hills, a plethora of water hazards, and strategically placed bunkers. This par-72 course caters to golfers of all skill levels with its player-friendly design and stunning natural beauty.

Here's a quick rundown of the key features:

  • Length (Blue): 6,939 yards
  • Length (Black): 7,321 yards
  • Par: 72
  • Rating: 74.3
  • Slope: 137
  • Course type: Traditional

Our Experience:

The course was undeniably in excellent condition, with well-maintained greens that rolled true. However, the practice facilities fell short of expectations, offering only a basic driving range, putting green, and short-game area. While the cart drink selection was decent and affordable, the overall value proposition in the winter months felt off-balance.

Winter Play Considerations:

While the course itself shines, it's important to consider the price tag during the winter season. Green fees range from $75 to $229, which may not feel justified compared to the peak season experience. While the course condition was fair for the season, and the pace of play exceeded our expectations, we still felt that this slow part of the year would warrant a more attractive price point for golfers. If we were in southern Florida where temperatures are warmer and the effects of the season less noticeable, then we could see keeping the premium price tag year round.

Final Ratings:

Here is how we would say this club stacked up in various key categories on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Please note that this review is based on winter course conditions.

Summary:

Slammer & Squire is a beautiful course with a forgiving layout, but the winter pricing may not be for everyone. If you're looking for a top-tier winter golf experience, consider factoring in the cost alongside the course's undeniable qualities.
